Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve
The wetlands, not the State Beach. Free. Dawn and late afternoon for birds. Inner interpretive trails are typically no dogs. Do not confuse this with Huntington Dog Beach a few miles south.
Practical
The Thursday email will not re-explain how to park every week. This page will. Event weekends (US Open, Airshow, July 4) change all of it.
Downtown structures beat circling Main. The 200 Main St garage is the usual 90-minute-free play for Surf City Nights. Beach lots along PCH fill by late morning in summer. Tuesday: Main closes for the market — cars off Main by 2pm. PCH crawls on Airshow (Oct 2–4, 2026) and any pier-south festival; bike or walk the last mile. We do not invent closure maps — city / Caltrans wins.
The Huntington Beach Bicycle Trail runs along PCH from Bolsa Chica State Beach down toward the Santa Ana River — the flat, obvious path you already know. Rentals cluster near Main and the pier. Give the kites and the strollers a lane. Night riding: lights, because the path is not a sidewalk for phones.

Camping, fire rings, the long sand. Pay the State Parks machine. Live music: SeaLegs.
The corner. Boards, rubber, the postcard. Open early. Lessons: ask the shop; they know who is teaching this week.
The other institution. If you need a loaner or a leash at 7am, one of these two is open.
Conditions: surf and kite desk. We do not invent swell.
Bait shop on the pier for the rail. Harbour shops for the boats. Most charters include gear; you still need a license off the pier. Pier fishing and tides: fishing.
Adventure Playground in Huntington Central Park (summer / posted days — it is not every afternoon). Shipley Nature Center in the same park, quieter. Pier Plaza grass and the surfing museum at 411 Olive. Tuesday market is stroller-ok before 6, a crush after. Swap meet at Golden West: no pets, lots of junk, kids like it anyway.
Folded into the food directory. Sugar Shack on Main is the breakfast line. Hotel patios (Pacific Hideaway) do weekday happy hour — confirm, because hotel bars change a card without telling a newsletter.
